Suranjan Khandalkar
Indian classical vocalist
Suranjan is one of the finest Hindustani Classical Vocalists of present times.
Having 'B' grade from All India Radio (AIR), he has performed worldwide since
his young age.
A favorite of music lovers in India and abroad, his mesmerizing voice and soulful
improvisation express the colors of shruti-raga-invocation by preserving the North
Indian classical vocal traditions specially Patiyala Gharana. Having a depth in
Khayal Gayaki, he sings Thumri, Bhajan, Ghazal, Kajari, Chaiti. He is also adept in
fusion and film music.
Being born in a musical family, a son of Pt. Raghunath Khandalkar, Suranjan started
taking tutelage from his father who is prime disciple of Sangeet Martand Pt.
Jasrajji in traditional Gurukul Parampara. Later on he got trained under the
guidance of Pt. Madhusudan Kulkarni and Dr. Pt. Ajay Pohankar. He has mastered
Hindustani Art Music with skills in polyrhythmic improvisation, expression and music
composition. Rooted in an adaptable mental framework, Suranjan is an active,
creative and an explorative musician with a plethora of skills; possesses musical
and business acumen to collaborate with trans-cultural musicians to create
customized, personalized music which could be traditional or unconventional.
Suranjan has risen as a playback singer for movies and albums. He has sung for Tamil
movie 'Pyaar prema kadhal ' and has 4 albums in light Devotional category. His
magical voice at young age brought him a chance of performing in USA, South Korea
and Dubai tour for classical and fusion music concerts. Suranjan has sung many duet
concerts with his brother Shubham Khandalkar.
Suranjan is blessed to be a part of some unique classical and fusion concerts. Some
of them are -
■Production “Melodic Rhythms†conceptualized and directed by
Padmashree
Pandit Vijay Ghate; an amalgamation of Hindustani Art music repertoires of
instrumental and percussion music along with Kathak Dance; performed in 25 concerts
in several cosmopolitan cities in India.
■Production “Beyond Bollywood†conceptualised and directed by
Padmashree
Pandit Vijay Ghate; to reiterate the identity of Indian classical music by
presenting Bollywood songs which are based on HindustÄni RÄga. Performed in 15+
concerts pan-India;
■Production “The Triad†video released globally; confluence of
Hollywood
and
Bollywood songs in a medley format and showcasing Tap dance with Kathak; musically
ideated, rearranged, directed and sung songs of Classical, Sufi, Ghazal, Qawwali,
Indian film genres which were layered with Hindustani RÄga music.
■“Shruti Ranjan†— a male-female duet showcasing classical and
semi-classical compositions of Indian music influences.
